About Shawn Johnson
Shawn Johnson has spent most of his adult life in public service, although not always in the same kind of uniform.
He served for 21 years as an Army combat medic in the Wyoming National Guard, including a deployment to Iraq in 2003 and 2004. After returning home, Shawn joined the Natrona County Sheriff’s Office, where he spent 13 years in law enforcement.
In 2014, Shawn was elected to the Casper City Council. He went on to serve two terms—eight years—including a year as vice mayor. During his time on the council, he developed a reputation for questioning unnecessary regulation, government spending, and policies that infringed on individual rights. He was often the person asking a simple question: Does government really need to be involved in this?
After leaving law enforcement, Shawn went to law school and earned his J.D. Today, he practices law in Wyoming, primarily in family law and criminal defense.
Shawn believes people should be free to make their own choices, raise their families, own property, run businesses, defend themselves, and live their lives without unnecessary government interference. He believes public officials have an obligation to be careful with taxpayers’ money and accountable for the decisions they make.
His military service has also shaped his views on foreign policy. Having served in Iraq, Shawn understands that decisions about war have consequences far beyond Washington. He believes sending Americans into harm’s way should be a last resort.
Shawn is running for Congress because he believes Wyoming needs an independent voice in Washington—someone willing to question his own party, vote against bad ideas regardless of where they come from, and remember who elected officials work for.
He has served as a soldier, deputy, city councilman, and attorney. Each role has given him a different view of government and a stronger belief in the importance of individual liberty, limited government, and accountability.
